I wanted to give you all an update and apologies that it has taken so long for me to do so, but the last year, as you can imagine has been extremely challenging in so many ways due to Covid-19 and the snake bite, especially coming to terms with the fact that I am now registered permanently blind and with limited mobility.

However, I wouldn’t have got through it all, had not been for your incredible generosity and support.  I was totally overwhelmed by the donations that literally poured in from all over the world in a few days, from complete strangers.  Your support, along with my family, my Sabirian colleagues, the hospital staff in India and the NHS here, have quite literally kept me going and has given me the determination to readjust and get back to work.  Words will never be enough to thank you all for what you have done for me.

I am determined now, no matter what the challenges are that I face ahead, to return to India and the work that I love and to continue supporting the people who rely on the charity business for their own livelihoods.  It has been an incredibly tough time for them too and a financially challenging time for the charity, so I want to return to India and give them the support they need.

I hope to make that journey in the next week or two and return to Jodhpur, Rajasthan and I have been spending time researching and learning to use new equipment and adaptations that can help me do the work I need to do when I arrive.

I know some people will perhaps find it hard to believe that I would go back especially after all I have been through, but this social enterprise and all the people it supports means everything to me.  As for the challenges I’ve faced and continue to face, well I’m just going to see it as the next instalment in life’s big adventure.  I have had so many people say to me you need to write a book, so, who knows, one day, if people want to read my story, then I will write a book about it all.

I have decided also to keep open the GoFundMe page but any additional money raised from now on will go directly to Sabirian.

Owned by Isle of Wight charity Community Action Isle of Wight, Sabirian is a social enterprise that provides employment and training opportunities for around 100 Indian craftspeople aged between 18-87, to help them trade their way out of poverty by providing training and help to import and sell their crafts and furniture in the UK and around the world in a sustainable and ethical way.

If you are interested in helping support Sabirian too, you can donate via

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your continued support.

Why do we use Fairly Traded rather than Fair Trade?

Whilst we are still a relatively young company and not yet accredatated by the World Fair Trade Organisation WFTO (we are working towards accreditation) Sabirian strictly adheres and follows the 10 principles of Fair Trade set by the World Fair Trade Organisation, these principles guide our practices.

The WFTO prescribes these Principles to organisations as a way of fighting against trade injustices and discrimination.

Our brand, Sabirian, has a clear message: we fight against poverty and the inequalities in trade through a new Fair Trade system.

What is Fair Trade?

DSC05681_edited.jpg

Fair Trade is more than just trading:

  • It proves that greater justice in world trade is possible.

  • It highlights the need for change in the rules and practice of conventional trade and shows how a successful business can also put people first.

  • It is a tangible contribution to the fight against poverty, climate change and economic crisis.

Sabirian is a Community Interest Company (Social Enterprise)

A community interest company is a business with primarily social objectives whose surpluses are reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit for share holders and owners. CICs tackle a wide range of social and environmental issues.

Here at Sabirian we believe that we have a distinct and valuable role to play in helping create a strong, sustainable and socially inclusive economy and inbstead of other "for profit" organisations all of our profit / surplus is reinvested back into Sabirian and also used for community inititatives.
